Musicians must keep their instruments cleaned and well tuned in order to produce the correct sounds. An ultrasonic cleaner provides surgical cleanliness to keys and valves on trumpets, trombones, saxophones and other musical instruments.
Paige’s Music in Indianapolis, Indiana, has been a leading supplier of musical instruments, as well as instrument repair and cleaning for central Indiana. Its primary business is its school rental program.
Midwest music programs typically thrive year-round, so Paige’s manages a non-stop cycle of returned school-owned and privately owned instruments requiring repair and cleaning – up to 3,000 per month.
Considering its clientele, often instruments return with more than the typical cleaning issues like oil, grime and calcium deposits. It’s not uncommon to find sugary drink stains, mold, mildew or even “creepy crawlies” from being in storage too long.
Despite these challenges, music directors, parents and musicians expect to receive instruments in pristine condition. Back in the day, Paige’s Director of Repair Services Tim Roethler and his staff had to hand scrub, often in places they couldn’t see, and use dangerous chemicals like chromic acid.
One day a salesman came in offering to loan them his ultrasonic blind cleaning machine, saying it might be able to help. A year later, Tim and his team still didn’t want to give it back. They began working with the Omegasonics team to customize machines to address their size, shape, space and power needs.
Twenty years later, Paige’s says their two floor models and two table top machines are constantly in use and have changed their business significantly. Most importantly, they no longer need to use dangerous industrial chemicals.
Paige’s is able to clean more instruments in less than half the time. Instruments that used to take 15-20 minutes or more just to clean are now cleaned in 3-5 minutes, giving them a competitive advantage over other shops in the area.
If you’re doing any kind of volume, you can’t afford not to have an ultrasonic unit in your shop. Since we started using ultrasonic cleaners, our customers now expect and receive the highest level of service. We’re doing things we couldn’t do before, and even customers with instruments from competing shops are coming to us just for cleaning. We are getting so much extra business from using the ultrasonic machines, we don’t need to charge an additional fee for this service.
