Americans spend a lot of time at work. Yet, if you ask around, the majority of people (who aren’t involved in professional sports) probably say that they do not enjoy being at work. That is a lot of time spent where you are not enjoying yourself.
It doesn’t have to be that way. You can find many ways to enjoy your day at your job, even if you really don’t like what you are doing. Here are some tips to increase your enjoyment of your work place.
Speed Up Those Meetings
Meeting time usually elicits eye-rolls from everyone on the way to the meeting room. If it is such an unenjoyable and tedious task, why do we waste so much time in meetings all day?
One of the main reasons meetings tend to drag on is that people do not focus on the purpose of the meeting. If everyone is alert and focused on the topic of the meeting, there can be a much more effective use of everyone’s time, not to mention much faster meeting as well.
Organize your meetings with an agenda and stick to that agenda. Before the meeting set specific goals for the meeting. Send out what the action items for the meeting are going to be so that attendees know the focus of the meeting. This way there is no scrambling around for the right spreadsheet or documents during the meeting.
Keep your meeting focused by asking participants to turn off their devices. If people tend to wander off topic, ask them to table it for a later discussion.
Remove the chairs from the meeting room. Nothing will speed a meeting along and keep everyone focused as much as a standing meeting.
Try Something New
Why do most people really look forward to their first day of work? It is the anticipation of an unexpected challenge. On your first day, you have no idea what to expect, and there are limitless challenges ahead of you.
The more time you spend at your job, the less challenges you might face and the more mundane your job may become. You can break this up by breaking up the routine.
Volunteer for a committee or something you wouldn’t normally do. Strike up a conversation with someone you pass frequently in the hall but have never spoken to before. See if there are additional duties that your boss is looking to assign that may have you interacting with different people in the office.
All of these are ways to break up the day-to-day routine and get you thinking your job is a new challenge again.
Plan Your Work Day
Do you make a to-do list in the morning? What about in the evening before you are about to leave? Odds are even if you do, you rarely stick to it. This probably means you are spending your time putting out fires.
Try to avoid emergency work if you can and stick to your to-do list. You may find that the more you stick to your list the less emergency work there is.
